EDMUND ROBERT ADAM GORDON

THIRD-BORN SON OF MAJOR GORDON

Edmund Robert Adam Gordon, Major Gordon's youngest son, was born on 25 March 1896 in Morningside, Edinburgh. Just like his older brother, he was a student at Haileybury College.

During the First World War outbreak, Edmund received a commission as a temporary Lieutenant in the 7th Seaforth Highlanders. He arrived with his unit in France on 10 May 1915 with the 8th Gordon Highlanders, the unit of his brother, the 8th Black Watch and the 5th Cameron Highlanders. During his first months on the front, he was fortunate to meet with his father. During the Battle of Loos, Edmund lost his older brother William and later suffered from Jaundice and Neurasthenia. On the day Major Gordon wanted to visit him, Edmund was evacuated to a railhead and placed in a Red Cross train bound for England.

On 25 August 1917, Major Gordon was informed that Edmund was wounded, and first suffered a leg wound and then a severe hand wound. He was hospitalised in the General Hospital N°8 at Rouen and later taken to a hospital in Brighton, where Major Gordon visited him. Over time his condition worsened, and he had to undergo several operations, which resulted in the amputation of some fingers and a part of his hand. Edmund later returned to the front and survived the war. However, his previous illness at the front had caused much damage to his lungs which later resulted in tuberculosis. He died this decease on 5 October 1932 in Chelsea, London.

Edmund married his wife, Vivienne Roberts, in Kensington in 1926, and the couple got their firstborn, Peter. Peter Gordon tragically died in his infancy. Vivienne (also written as Vivien and Vivian) Daisy Roberts was born on 15 June 1900 in Clitheroe, Lancashire.  She presumably married Edmund in July 1926 in Kensington and later registered as a Balham and Tooting resident in 1933. In 1936 she was located at Hampstead, and during the Second World War, she can be retraced to Kensington. By the end of the '50s, she is registered in Putney and afterwards back in Hampstead in the early 60s. We searched many records to find the birthdate of Peter, but with no results; non-other children are also found on Vivienne. Vivienne never remarried and held the name Gordon till her death.

Vivienne Daisy Gordon died on 7 May 1991 in Highgate, London, at the age of 90.
