LIZZIE MAUDE SMITH/GORDON AKA "MAUDE"

A TWIN DAUGHTER OF IRISH DESCENT

Archibald Alexander Gordon married Lizzie Maude Smith in 1892, and the couple received three children:

William Hyde Eagleson (23 August 1893 – 30 September 1915)

Archibald George Ramsay (23 August 1893 – 26 December 1893)

Edmund Robert Adam Gordon (25 maart 1896 – 5 oktober 1932)

Lizzie Maude Smith was born on 24 January 1872, the twin daughter of Edmund Davidson Smith and Mary Mathilda Collis. Her twin sister was Frances Alma Smith, and she had two older brothers, William and Edmund and her halfsister Mabel Sarah Anne Hyde Macbean, who was born on 27 May 1867. Mabel married Herbert Wyatt Harrisson in 1907 and died on 27 May 1952.

Her father was born on 27 June 1833 and was listed in 1912 as a Lieutenant-Colonel of the 95th foot and had served this regiment as an Ensign from 1853 onwards. On 6 June 1854, he was promoted to lieutenant and became a Captain a year later. In 1866 he was listed as a Major, was later given the position of Fort Major, and was appointed to Adjutant on 16 January 1874. Outside the army, he was a member of the Grand Lodge of Freemasons in Ireland since 1857. Later he joined the United Grand Lodge of Freemasons in England in 1869. In 1916, Edmund Davidson Smith was listed as Major-General. The same year he died on 8 September and was buried in Kensal Green Cemetery, London.

Maude lost her oldest son William during the Battle of Loos during the First World War. She met with Queen Elisabeth of Belgium afterwards at her home in London. The Queen spoke the whole afternoon with her and had a big heart for all suffering. Maude's health worsened at the end of the war because of the poor food London had to offer during the war. Her husband resigned as Private Secretary, and they moved to Stow-on-the-Wold. Here Maude's condition did not improve because of the high altitude. After a brief holiday in Major Gordon's hometown, Bridge of Allan, they saw that the climate was perfect for Maude's health. A year later, Major Gordon bought the property Jessamine and the couple lived happily for many years.

Maude died on the 13th of July 1929 and is buried in Logie Cemetery, Stirlingshire.
