Colonel Simon Fraser Mackenzie, 7th of Mountgerald succeeded his older brother Colin and Alexander after their untimely deaths. He was a Lieutenant-Colonel in the Madras Cavalry and married, first, a daughter of Colonel Pendergast with who he received Mary Mackenzie (niece to Major Gordon). He got remarried to Margaret, daughter of General Stewart, without issue. In 1855, he sold Mountgerald to Lewis Mark Mackenzie of Findon, who died unmarried in 1856.
His daughter Mary Mackenzie visited Major Gordon on 26 July 1900 and donated the sketch below of the Mackenzies' tomb at Dingwall. She later bequeathed her father's portrait (seen above) along with that of Colin Mackenzie, 5th of Mountgerald, to Major Gordon.
